Hi everyone, we are Charlotte (the Titch) and Emma (the Giant). We live in Manchester and run our own blog ‘The Giant, The Titch and The Wardrobe’. We both absolutely adore shopping at charity shops and Barnardo’s is definitely a favourite, so we can’t wait to start writing more for Barnardo’s and showing off our best buys.
When first starting work at Barnardo’s over a year ago the aim was to raise the profile and get the word out about the store. I used Instagram personally to look for vintage inspiration and to connect to independent brands and large companies visually. Instagram is a great way to spread the word about the amazing items we have in store; it’s so easy to upload your pictures and tag the relevant people in your images.
We’ve had a look through all of the fabulous things our shoppers have found in our stores recently and picked a few of our favourites. Take a look…
First of all, we have some beautiful #mybarnardosfinds from Marieta (@aheadofroses) who came across this cosy checked winter coat in our Shipquary Street store in Derry. Marieta told us it’s her favourite thing to wear right now and we think it looks great too!
No matter what their age, everyone deserves to have a stocking full of presents at Christmas. So when a colleague asked me to make her Dad a stocking, I was happy to rise to the challenge.
The challenge was finding a piece of clothing at my local Barnardo’s store that I thought would be suitable for a man, and would make an attractive stocking. After having a good look through the stock, we found a skirt that was perfect for the stocking. We had a lovely chat with the staff in the shop about how we were going to create a stocking using the skirt. At first they weren’t quite sure but by the end I think we convinced them!
Once the skirt was home I took it apart and used the brown satin lining of the skirt to line the stocking. I then found some dark red cotton material to make the top of the stocking and the reindeer. The red cotton matched the red in the tweed and added a little more of a Christmas touch. With a little ribbon sewn onto the back to hang the stocking up, a man’s Christmas stocking was made. I have to say I’m rather pleased with it. Read More »
Another week, another set of fabulous finds that you’ve come across in our stores. Let’s take a look at some of our favourites…
We begin with The-Thrift regular Martina Davis (@essentiallyginger) who found this floral dress, originally from Whistles, at the bargain price of just £5! The length of this dress makes it extremely versatile and proves that floral prints aren’t just for summer.
With Christmas just around the corner, what better excuse do we need to update the old wardrobe with sparkles, sequin, glitz and glam? It’s the perfect opportunity to dress OTT, shine bright and stand out. With high street stores selling out of their Christmas must-haves fast, the best way to avoid the horror of being dressed the same as someone else is to get rummaging in your local charity shop for that perfect unique party show-stopper.
As most of you know by now, I love a bit of pink to make the boys wink! This stunning Topshop number was one of my best buys at only £10. The beading detail gives it instant character, meaning you don’t need to worry about adding lots of accessories to it, as the dress speaks for itself. The colour is fun and flirty and the shape of the dress will hide a multitude of sins from all the festive food we will no doubt be indulging in!
We’ve had lots of fantastic posts showing off all of the great items you’ve found in your local Barnardo’s store. We’ve rounded up some of our favourites…take a look!
First up is one of our fab fashion guest bloggers, Martina Davis (@essentiallyginger) who came across this beautiful sequined lilac top. We absolutely love the butterfly detailing on the back which really makes for a unique and elegant look. Martina paired this with a simple black skirt and tights – the perfect Christmas party look!
Charity shops are full of goodies! Everybody knows that, but they are also full of goodies that can be changed into something else. I head down to my local Barnardo’s store on a regular basis to find donated items that I can make into fun things like these bags!
Not sure what to buy the man in your life for Christmas? No need to panic, we have you covered!
Whether it’s something for Dad, a present for your brother or the perfect gift for the other men in your life, we have lots in store guaranteed to make this Christmas fantastic!
We are very lucky at Barnardo’s retail that many big brands donate items to our stores; we have selected some of the best bits from our South Woodford store including some luxury new items. Of course these are specially selected items which we have limited availability of, however we have loads more fashionable bargains for men starting from as little as £2.99!
Perfect for Dad
Dads can often be the most difficult to buy for at Christmas. You ask any Dad what they would like and more than often the response is non-committal.
A good quality designer shirt is perfect and will last for years, so you can be rest assured that Dad won’t be embarrassing you at Aunty Helen’s New Year’s Eve party with that awful Hawaiian print top he seems to think he looks so cool in!
