If, like us, you still aren’t quite ready for your summer wardrobe to make its annual debut, look no further than a patterned shirt, which you can guarantee Barnardo’s will always have in abundance.
Whatever the print, a shirt is the perfect gradual transition into the lighter months. You can choose light-weight, structured, open neck, long-length…and best of all, you don’t have to hunt through the second-hand items praying for the correct size, because there’s nothing more chic (and comfy) than an oversized shirt!
Emma: On Saturday it was blue skies but cool breezes, so I chucked on this buttoned up, long-sleeved blouse with jeans and trainers; I was covered up and comfortable but the bold, floral print meant I was summertime ready.

Sunday presented a different challenge: it was a super warm day but I still can’t bear those little holiday outfits in the UK, so my polka-dot shirt was ideal. It’s loose fitting and a thin fabric, plus the cute, spotty print looks so retro with my Barnardo’s paisley head scarf – perfect for keeping my fringe back in that heat!
(Polka-dot shirt £1.99, headscarf £2.99, Barnardo’s)
Charlotte: Striped cotton shirts are seriously on trend this season – you can’t go anywhere at the moment without seeing someone rocking a lightly striped number. I found this red and white striped shirt in the Manchester Piccadilly branch and couldn’t resist – I’d seen similar items in Primark, New Look and Topshop so was thrilled to have stumbled across such a bargain! Nice and light and perfect for spring; I styled it with black jeans and a pair of tan, chunky, block heels.
(Stripy shirt £4.99, Barnardo’s)
To conclude; printed shirts are a summer wardrobe essential! Practical and stylish – pop to your local Barnardo’s and grab yourself a selection of fun patterns J
