When Barnardo’s got in touch about guest blogging for The Thrift, I immediately said yes! I couldn’t wait for an excuse to have a browse through the racks of pre-loved clothes at my local Barnardo’s in Tunbridge Wells.
One of the things I love about Barnado’s is that they colour co-ordinate their rails. It allows you to look at things in other sizes that you might not usually choose, or give a second thought to. You just never know what you will find. I’ve picked up some real gems over the years.
I always approach charity-shopping with an open mind. If I go in looking for a specific item of clothing, I may not find it. So, I like to browse the entire store, including the bric-a-brac. Vintage clothing is also a passion of mine, so I am always looking at the labels on the pieces I pick up. One of my favourite brands is C&A, so when I stumbled upon this vintage C&A coat, I snatched it up and practically skipped to the dressing room!
Anyone that follows my Instagram will know that I love a good coat! Not only did this one tick the C&A brand box, but it is also Alpaca – think camel coat but better! I have a bit of a collection of natural hair coats, all vintage and found in charity shops over the years, and this Alpaca one fits right in – welcome to the family!
I love the classic shape and the neutral colour which means that it will go with almost everything. It’s both light weight and warm and I have not stopped wearing it since I bought it. What’s more, I picked it up for just £24.99! I teamed it with my new high-waisted Topshop jeans and a retro Next blouse found last year in Hospice in the Weald. The belt is from Age UK, vintage leather boots from Sue Ryder and my bamboo handled bag is from Scope. The bunny keyring came from a stall in my local shopping center.
So what are you waiting for? Head to your local Barnardo’s and make sure you have a good rummage. There are so many amazing pre-loved items to be found!
