Vintage Shopping At Cheadle

Hi I’m Gemma and I manage Barnardo’s Vintage, situated in quaint Cheadle.

The store, which is Barnardo’s only specialist vintage shop in the UK, stocks a vast range of clothing and accessories. There is an eclectic mix of pre-loved items, ranging from 1960’s tea services to 1970’s dagger collar shirts and maxi skirts. It’s a vintage enthusiasts dream; brimming with treasures just waiting to be discovered.

Fashion DIY: A Man’s Shirt to a Frill Hem Top

hannah 1

I always think that a man’s shirt is the absolute easiest item to pick up in a charity shop. For a few pounds you can usually find a shirt with a jazzy pattern or colour you love. Being cotton they are also so easy to work with when sewing so that’s why I am always drawn to them when looking to do a little upcycling.

My Barnardo’s Lookbook

So, I’ll start off by saying a huge hello and thank you to everyone that’s taking the time to read this blog post I’ve put together for Barnardo’s. I’ve created a look book featuring some of my favourite Barnardo’s finds and how I style them to create some of my favourite looks.

I started charity shopping when I was just 13. I picked up a black pinstripe blazer for just £1.99 and it quickly because a wardrobe staple of mine. Since October 2017 I started to re-embrace the slow fashion movement. I have been browsing weekly to collect some fabulous finds, initially wearing a mix of high street and vintage, but now wearing full-on charity shop looks. Lucky for me, we have not one, but two Barnardo’s stores in Worksop. The 99p store is always my first point of call!

Time For A Spring Clean?

Did you know Brits could be hoarding more than 640 million items of clothing that they no longer wear?

Has your wardrobe turned into more of a ‘floor-drobe’ of late?

With so many items of clothing being left to languish in the backs of people’s wardrobes, we are urging you to relinquish control and have that much needed Spring clean. Once done, simply drop your donations off at your local Barnardo’s store!

Try our quiz today to find out which wardrobe persona you are, and then find your local store!

Denim on the double

For some it’s a controversial combo, but denim on denim isn’t something I’ve ever shied away from. Increasingly people are choosing not to follow the “rules” of fashion, but more importantly we’re wearing what makes us feel good. It’s so important to have your own sense of style – I like to think of mine as quite eclectic. Fashion is a way to express myself and be creative. I don’t take myself too seriously and I love mixing things up – and denim makes up a big part of my quirky look!

I’ve been lucky enough to pick up a fair few pairs of Levi 501s in Barnardo’s. You’ll pay a fraction of the cost for the same pair in a vintage shop, let alone brand new. You’ll need to have a rummage in the men’s section for sure – break those fashion ‘rules’, remember! I’ve found my more unique vintage denim pieces like 80’s pantaloon-style or denim culottes in vintage shops.

Suits have shaken off their corporate reputation, thanks to new relaxed silhouettes and fabrics. The trick is to ensure they look relaxed, rather than formal. Naomi emulates this perfectly by teaming them with a slogan tee and a leather jacket. It’s a super-easy and trend setting outfit, making it unsurprising that it’s become a street style secret weapon.

Spring In Three Words? Feel Good Fashion.

Perfect Pastels

Gelato hues. For spring. Ground-breaking! This season’s twist comes in a pastel pile-up of parma violet, lemon sorbet, and layers of pistachio. This might look like tough work, but it’s surprisingly easy to create: scan your wardrobe, pick every pastel item in sight, and stack those ice cream shades one on top of another like a triple scoop of your favourite flavours.
