Recycling Week 2021 is here. This is the perfect week to tackle a little up-cycling, re-wear something in your wardrobe or if shopping, be sure to hit up your local Barnardo’s.

Josephine is a hairdresser and established charity shopping pioneer thanks to her now retired YouTube channel which consisted of mainly vintage & charity Shop hauls and lookbooks. She was elected the ‘Shop Good Stuff’ Ambassador for Giving Tuesday in 2016 and has continued to spread the message of second hand love, choosing to buy entirely second hand only from January 2019.
I’ve spent most of my adult life rummaging through charity shop rails, often finding garments I loved that didn’t fit or that I wished I could alter. It’s only very recently that I’ve started taking sewing more seriously. I’ve always hand sewn but I’ve never wanted to invest in a sewing machine as I’ve heard so many horror stories about what a nightmare they can be. My Mum lent me her old sewing machine to practice on and I’ve finally invested in a machine of my own!

I was asked by Barnardo’s to join in with Recycle Week by up-cycling an item of clothing surprisingly sent to me, I automatically thought, WHAT A FUN CHALLENGE!
As an avid repairs and up-cycling seamstress with my brand, Soul and Flare, I was excited to receive my parcel. I opened up the box and to my delight there was an indigo wash, women’s denim shirt by Uniqlo. HURRAH!
When Barnardo’s asked me if I wanted to take part in their upcycling challenge for Recycle Week, I jumped at the chance! I’m very passionate about pre-loved clothes, and even more so, recycling and upcycling them into something new.
I was asked if I wanted to choose my own clothes or be sent a mystery parcel. I opted for the latter. When my parcel arrived (which including a sweet little sewing kit) the dress inside was something that I would never have chosen myself in a million years (I think this is a good thing… I love a challenge!)
The dress was a pretty smart evening gown from Hamells Wavelength, made of stretch velour with a great glitter detail and a deep v-shaped back. I’d guess it’s not that old, so not my usual vintage style (I love the 60s, 70s and 80s), plus it was a bit big and shapeless on me.

Hi there! My name is Imali and I’m a student blogger from the Midlands. If you are a student, or even if you’re not, I’m sure you can relate to the fact that clothes are expensive. It’s easy to spend £100 on accessories alone, and that’s before the clothes and makeup! As a full-time student, I just don’t have that kind of money but doesn’t mean I have to compromise on my style.
For some it’s a controversial combo, but denim on denim isn’t something I’ve ever shied away from. Increasingly people are choosing not to follow the “rules” of fashion, but more importantly we’re wearing what makes us feel good. It’s so important to have your own sense of style – I like to think of mine as quite eclectic. Fashion is a way to express myself and be creative. I don’t take myself too seriously and I love mixing things up – and denim makes up a big part of my quirky look!
I’ve been lucky enough to pick up a fair few pairs of Levi 501s in Barnardo’s. You’ll pay a fraction of the cost for the same pair in a vintage shop, let alone brand new. You’ll need to have a rummage in the men’s section for sure – break those fashion ‘rules’, remember! I’ve found my more unique vintage denim pieces like 80’s pantaloon-style or denim culottes in vintage shops.
