Volunteering At Barnardo’s Vintage

A huge hello to everyone reading! My name is Alice, I’m 28, I love the Simpsons and adore all things vintage! In January 2015 I was having a difficult time with my mental health and wasn’t working. Enter: Barnardo’s Vintage! A Barnardo’s charity shop like no other.

At that time, I was living with my parents in their new house, down the road from Cheadle Village. A stroll out one day lead to my first visit to Barnardo’s Vintage; I decided almost instantly that volunteering there was something I would absolutely love to do. Why was that?  It seemed to be a place that had the ultimate escapism affect (I wasn’t wrong). The kitsch jewellery, children’s toys, balls of yarn – there was so much variety to take in. A fascinating place, laid out to perfection.Read More »

Volunteering At Cheadle

Have you got some spare time on your hands this summer? Why not volunteer at your local Barnardo’s! Check out just some of the reasons why Katy and Daisy love volunteering at our Vintage store in Cheadle.

I decided to start volunteering after I finished my degree. I knew it would be the perfect time to develop a number of transferable skills. While I’ve always been a fan of charity shopping, I knew that Barnardo’s Vintage was the shop I particularly wanted to volunteer for. I have been a fan of the store for quite some time, finding most of its appeal in the fact it sold vintage clothing at a much more affordable price than anywhere in the Norther Quarter. There is also that added value of knowing that the money raised is going to a great cause. I have always enjoyed working with children, and in the past I have helped teach STEM subjects at schools, as well as helping out at a local Brownies. Being involved in a charity which does so much to help children is something that is very important to me.

My Day In Cheadle

Each time my li’l mellow yellow VW travels from York back to my hometown of Stockport, there is always one essential location on my must-visit list, and that is Cheadle. Why Cheadle? One word – ‘Barnardo’s’, of course!

Yes, Cheadle High Street is blessed with not one, but two Barnardo’s shops, each brimming with bargainous goodies. Of course, my absolute favourite, being a 60s and 70s obsessive, is ‘Barnardo’s Vintage’ – winner of ‘Specialist Shop of the Year’ last Summer at the Charity Retail Association Awards. Manager Gemma has now been given the well-deserved accolade of being a judge at the 2018 awards (get nominating now! Nominations need to be in by 2nd April), and her lovely shop has been recently featured in Refinery29’s list of the best charity shops in the UK.

Why I Love Volunteering

Hi team!

So this week I am talking about my time volunteering for Barnardo’s. I spent a lot of time shopping at the Stockbridge Barnardo’s store in Edinburgh. On one shopping trip I saw that they were looking for a Visual Merchandiser volunteer – something I have a huge interest in. Naturally I had to go in and sign up! I remember being very nervous for my first shift, as at the time I was in the midst of depression and found it hard to leave the house at times. Volunteering, even just for my four hour shift each week was a huge step for me and in the end it really helped.

My Volunteering Experience By Mel

Wednesday’s, the one day of the week that I can guarantee will be a success. Why? It’s the day I volunteer at Barnardo’s. My friend introduced me to the idea of volunteering about seven months ago and I can honestly say I’m having the best experience!

My manager Leanne and I hit it off immediately. So much so when I heard she was moving stores, I followed her. I was given the exciting role of creating fun window displays to draw the public in. I was given free rein to be creative and this has given me a huge amount of my confidence back. Plus, having a fashion degree under my belt means I can finally put my skills to good use, thank god!
