Hi Everyone! I’m Gilly, aka Silly Gilly Vintage, seller and buyer of all things 60s and 70s. When Gemma, the manager of my favourite charity shop, Barnardo’s Vintage in Cheadle, suggested I should write a blog post about my vintage shopping escapades, I thought, what better than to showcase the wonderful preview evening she had planned. And after the lack of Summer we have had in the UK of late, what better escapism than a hula party!
Spring has finally sprung and I couldn’t be happier. As much as I adore my ever-growing collection of faux fur and teddy coats, I am also a big fan of sunshine, ice creams and mini dresses, all of which are not the most Winter- friendly! Now, I am not one to follow trends – I enjoy wearing what I want to wear and don’t want to repurchase a whole new wardrobe every season because that’s boring (and expensive!). Luckily, a lot of the key trends for Spring/Summer are purse friendly and ‘oh- so- me’, which makes being on trend more natural and fun. Without further ado, I’m going to talk you through my favourite key trends for Spring/Summer 2017!
Trend One- Gingham
Who doesn’t love looking like a picnic blanket?! In case you’ve been living underground, you’ve no doubt seen that gingham is everywhere this season. It’s been seen on catwalk shows including Molly Goddard and Shrimps and everywhere on the high street from Primark to Topshop; it is probably the key print for Spring.Read More »
When Barnardo’s set me the challenge of styling an item from one of their shops in three different ways, I was so excited. I love charity, pre-loved and vintage hunting; it is so much more rewarding than high street shopping, especially when you find an incredible piece! I headed down to my local Barnardo’s in Whitley Bay, and it wasn’t long before I found something. A white shirt, or blouse, is a basic which everyone should probably have in their wardrobe, but I didn’t actually own one since I’ve never quite found the perfect one for me within my budget. Cue this amazing Wallis number! The ruffles on the front are so on trend for S/S17 and I love the balloon sleeves. It is such a versatile piece and I actually got it in the sale for £1.55!
He started out as an X-Factor wannabe and soon become part of one of the world’s biggest boy bands and not to mention, all-around heart-throb with a keen eye for fashion.
Breaking dozen of hearts when One Direction took a break, Harry Styles has certainly been keeping himself busy. In between taking on Hollywood – thanks to his role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming World War II epic Dunkirk – Styles has reportedly been putting the finishing touches on his first solo album, with the release rumoured for today!
He definitely knows how to grab people’s attention and his fashion choices are no different. While we wait with bated breath for today’s big release, why not keep scrolling and join us while we swoon over the British heart-throb’s best looks.
Peace, love and freedom, that my lovelies is the 70s in a nutshell…but what about the fashion?
Now this certainly isn’t a revolution to any of us…that 70s trend has been around for a few seasons now, but my prediction, by glancing through fashion magazines, is it’s not going anywhere, anytime soon! Yay!
Want to know why this is so exciting for us charity shop lovers?!
Barnardo’s is a colloquial treasure chest of 70’s jewels, just waiting to be found.
So what exactly am I looking for when I think 70’s fashion?
In list form…. (Because I’m handy like that!)
Jumpsuits and overalls – Any kind of all-in-one will work a treat, although if you really want to get this trend on point, go for a flared style or look for a large floral print. Even a more plain style of dungaree can be matched with a seventies style turtleneck or floaty blouse to get your retro vibe on!
This week marked the end of Winter and the start of Spring (yay) so we’ve found some #mybarnardosfind looks that sum these two seasons up…and patterns seem to be the key theme.
Hels, (@thegreen_flamingo), bought this patterned stream-lined dress from our Canterbury store, and matched it brilliantly with a black leather jacket and heeled ankle boots. Very biker chic! We’re sure this long number will be perfect on its own when it gets warmer in Spring, or the addition of some colourful accessories will brighten it up.
The Barnardo’s Retail team share their top picks from this week’s #mybarnardosfind uploads on Instagram!
It’s the first #mybarnardosfind blog of 2016 and we have already been tagged in on a whole host of amazing images from our lovely shoppers across the UK. We are so pleased to see you have been spending your Christmas hols having a good mooch around our stores.
It may already feel like a lifetime ago, but we’re kicking off by re-visiting the fabulous @Kelly_Pauling’s Christmas Eve outfit! Kelly has added a touch of sports luxe to her #mybarnardosfind leather skirt by simply throwing on an American football shirt. You have certainly scored a home run with that look @Kelly_Pauling!
If you flicked through any fashion mags this summer, you’ll probably have noticed the seventies trend that has taken the high street by storm. Floaty, bohemian dresses and paisley prints have been the look of the summer, and this trend isn’t going away any time soon.
