For The Love Of Coats

When Barnardo’s got in touch about guest blogging for The Thrift, I immediately said yes! I couldn’t wait for an excuse to have a browse through the racks of pre-loved clothes at my local Barnardo’s in Tunbridge Wells.

One of the things I love about Barnado’s is that they colour co-ordinate their rails. It allows you to look at things in other sizes that you might not usually choose, or give a second thought to. You just never know what you will find. I’ve picked up some real gems over the years.

My Day In Cheadle

Each time my li’l mellow yellow VW travels from York back to my hometown of Stockport, there is always one essential location on my must-visit list, and that is Cheadle. Why Cheadle? One word – ‘Barnardo’s’, of course!

Yes, Cheadle High Street is blessed with not one, but two Barnardo’s shops, each brimming with bargainous goodies. Of course, my absolute favourite, being a 60s and 70s obsessive, is ‘Barnardo’s Vintage’ – winner of ‘Specialist Shop of the Year’ last Summer at the Charity Retail Association Awards. Manager Gemma has now been given the well-deserved accolade of being a judge at the 2018 awards (get nominating now! Nominations need to be in by 2nd April), and her lovely shop has been recently featured in Refinery29’s list of the best charity shops in the UK.

An Evening Of Vintage Shopping

Hi Everyone! I’m Gilly, aka Silly Gilly Vintage, seller and buyer of all things 60s and 70s. When Gemma, the manager of my favourite charity shop, Barnardo’s Vintage in Cheadle, suggested I should write a blog post about my vintage shopping escapades, I thought, what better than to showcase the wonderful preview evening she had planned. And after the lack of Summer we have had in the UK of late, what better escapism than a hula party!

Why I Love Volunteering

Hi team!

So this week I am talking about my time volunteering for Barnardo’s. I spent a lot of time shopping at the Stockbridge Barnardo’s store in Edinburgh. On one shopping trip I saw that they were looking for a Visual Merchandiser volunteer – something I have a huge interest in. Naturally I had to go in and sign up! I remember being very nervous for my first shift, as at the time I was in the midst of depression and found it hard to leave the house at times. Volunteering, even just for my four hour shift each week was a huge step for me and in the end it really helped.

My Vintage Finds By Era-Go-Again

Hi, I’m Lucy, lover of all things vintage, retro and on a budget. You can find me blogging over on Era-Go-Again!

As a vintage blogger I look out for pieces from the 40’s and 50’s. I also love picking up pieces that I can incorporate with my vintage bits for a perfect everyday look. True vintage clothing is an expensive hobby but one that I love. You can imagine my excitement when I come across beautiful vintage pieces in my local charity shops. Keep scrolling to see what I picked up at my local Barnardo’s.

Volunteering at Cheadle

Hey guys! I hope you have all had a brilliant start to the New Year? Speaking of New Years, did you guys make any resolutions for 2017? Ever thought about volunteering? Here I give you an insight into why volunteering for Barnardo’s is amazing and how I got involved myself!

Last year, after I started blogging, one of the lovely ladies from Barnardo’s Retail contacted me, asking if I would be interested in writing for their blog ‘The-Thrift’.

I jumped at the opportunity and set off to my local Barnardo’s. I hadn’t previously shopped at charity shops, but when I did I was amazed, most of the clothes are brand new or in immaculate condition, the staff are friendly, and the stores look amazing – clothes colour blocked and in size order which makes it easy to view.

I had certaintly caught the charity shopping bug, and this in-turn encouraged me to sign up to volunteer at my local Barnardo’s.

Breakfast at The BBC with Gemma

I was recently very lucky to receive a phone call from Pav the producer of BBC Radio Manchester. She invited me to the studio to talk about vintage and collectables and advise callers on what to hang onto for value in the future.

I arrived at the studio bright and early and was met at reception by the lovely Libby, who briefed me on the schedule for the morning. I can talk about vintage forever which was perfect as they asked me to stay for the whole breakfast show rather than my expected 45 minutes. It was really exciting to see the behind the scenes operations and all the people who run the production of the radio show.

Ruby Red – The Christmas Trend

As Christmas party invites begin to pile up, it’s the perfect time to invest in some red pieces for your wardrobe. Red is a flexible colour that can work for any event, from casual drinks with office friends to get-togethers with the family.

Think rich shades of crimson and deep wine hues that will add a touch of class to any outfit – and don’t be afraid to overload on the glitter and sequins this season. If you’re worried about looking too much like a festive bauble, tone down the outfit by adding a simple velvet clutch bag or wrap around a faux fur collar.
