70’s Style Chic

Over the last couple of years, charity shopping has really started to spike. Vintage and pre-loved pieces are trending all over Instagram and retro is yet again back in fashion. As a Londoner, I am only a stone’s throw away from the vintage shops that dominate Brick Lane. While most people flock to these vintage spots for their retro outfits, charity shops can sometimes be overlooked. They offer a great avenue to find amazing pieces at a fraction of the price, as well as rehoming lovely pre-loved items.

My wardrobe is dominated by colour, and pieces with a 70’s vibe. With that in mind, I have pieced together two 70’s style looks, with pre-loved item’s from Barnardo’s and Traid, which I picked up on a recent charity shopping spree in Brixton.

Mustard Chic

I picked up this striped shirt in the Lytham St Anne’s Barnardo’s, during a girly weekend in Blackpool back in September. The mustard yellow caught my eye immediately as it’s one of my favourite colours at this time of year – ideal for transitioning into our autumn/winter wardrobe. A stripe is a timeless print, which in my opinion, always adds a spot of chicness. Plus, I love a dipped hem/front-tuck combo; loose and comfy but still has shape.

You can almost always find a great smart shirt in Barnardo’s, one like this high-neck number. I love a high-neck shirt but whenever I try one on I just don’t seem to be able to pull it off. Although I can’t pull off the high-neck style I still loved the fabric of this shirt and wanted to make it into something I would feel comfortable to wear for all occasions.

With only some scissors, a little thread and a needle you can chill (like I did) in front of the TV (a favourite pastime of mine) and turn a smart shirt into something a little more casual and comfortable for everyday wear.Read More »

I always think that a man’s shirt is the absolute easiest item to pick up in a charity shop. For a few pounds you can usually find a shirt with a jazzy pattern or colour you love. Being cotton they are also so easy to work with when sewing so that’s why I am always drawn to them when looking to do a little upcycling.

My Barnardo’s Lookbook

So, I’ll start off by saying a huge hello and thank you to everyone that’s taking the time to read this blog post I’ve put together for Barnardo’s. I’ve created a look book featuring some of my favourite Barnardo’s finds and how I style them to create some of my favourite looks.

I started charity shopping when I was just 13. I picked up a black pinstripe blazer for just £1.99 and it quickly because a wardrobe staple of mine. Since October 2017 I started to re-embrace the slow fashion movement. I have been browsing weekly to collect some fabulous finds, initially wearing a mix of high street and vintage, but now wearing full-on charity shop looks. Lucky for me, we have not one, but two Barnardo’s stores in Worksop. The 99p store is always my first point of call!

My Thrifting Habit

My thrifting habit goes back a long way – to the 80s in fact. I was 14 years old when I started. My friend and I would seek particular areas of Birmingham where there were clusters of charity shops. We would look for vintage pieces – fake fur, leather and suede jackets, vintage dresses etc. We loved retro fashion from the 60s and 70s and we wanted authentic, we wanted quality and we most definitely wanted cheap!

Our love of fashion was influenced by the music we listened to. Well… fashion and music in the UK has always gone hand-in-hand hasn’t it? My style influences back then, and now included Debbie Harry, total style icon, and Nico for her minimalist chic look. I loved that charity shops offered items that were a bit different from what the high street had to offer. We could be fashionably creative without busting our meagre budget.

I’ve chosen some pictures that show some of the great pieces I’ve managed to find, all bought from Barnardo’s and other charity shops.

It’s a classic!
